You might be safe in your present position, however when you are going to apply for the new post you may require an employment reference from the person who is working with you who knows you better.

Many of the companies request for 3-5 employment references. It is the best you obtain the reference when you are working there and when you was in contact with the ideal people who will provide guarantee about your performance, personality traits, and skills.

The question is to whom and how to ask for the reference for your next employment. Before listing the name of person for reference, take permission from him. Request to the persons who are in supervising, management, mentoring or client positions for written or verbal references.

Also get references from co-workers and former employers, lecturers and teachers, and also your pastor, or somebody who community services with you. Make them aware about what type of job you are looking for. It will assure that their references will match with your applications.

Most of the companies only state the employers beginning date and separation date, salary and position type, because they want to protect themselves from any lawsuits. So while leaving any company, don't forget to take a reference letter. When the individual who leaves the company or the company closes, a person will have at least an employment reference letter to prove that he was employed.

The new employer or the hiring manager wants your earlier employment or your earlier history such as whether your were studying full time or haven't worked prior. You can get your character references from military personnel, business acquaintances, pastors and neighbors.

Get reference letters whenever possible and put them in a folder or a file safely. Once in a month, pile up and modify the reference list. Every reference letter should include:

  • Person's name
  • Designation
  • Company Name
  • Contact numbers
  • Address
  • Relationship
Please don't write references in your cover letter or resume, instead of that it should be written on a another paper so that you can hand over or fax it to the potential employer when requested. Before you hand the list to the potential interviewer, ensure that all the individuals are reliable, relevant and their contact information is still same.
